Which soil is right for my plant?

Choose from one of our mixes:

Alocasia soil, Monstera & Philodendron soil, Cacti and Succulent soil, Fern soil, Orchid & Anthurium soil or our general purpose soil which works for most plants, made with all our usual high quality ingredients with a balance of moisture retention and drainage.

Due to the vast variety of plants and their needs some plants might need different qualities when it comes to drainage or moisture retention.

In these cases we will recommend what can be added to a specific mix to make it perfect for your plant.

We are working on a more comprehensive list to make this easier for you.

If unsure, please feel free to ask and we can point you in the right direction.

Why go peat free?

Simply put the harvesting and use of it is terrible for the environment, it is a non-renewable source which is a massive carbon sink and ecosystem if left where it belongs, in the ground.

Coco coir is a tried and tested more sustainable option to peat when mixed with the right ingredients.

Like most things in life coir has its own problems but is generally considered a better option for a more sustainable plant industry.

For more information check out what the RHS have to say about it.

What is coco coir?

Coco coir is a byproduct of the coconut industry. It is made from the fibrous husks of coconuts and is a sustainable alternative to peat moss. Coco coir has several characteristics that make it useful including is capacity to hold water without becoming waterlogged like peat moss, it also has better drainage and aeration properties then peat.

Coco coir is the base ingredient to which other ingredients are added to make our premium soils.

We also use coco husk or chips which are the chopped up husk from the coconut. These help make a chunkier mix for better aeration as well as storing water and nutrients within.

What are worm castings?

Worm castings in essence are what comes from the rear end of worms, it's their poop. Lucky unlike that of other creatures it does not smell or come with all the downsides.

They are created by thousands of worms breaking down organic material and what comes out after being screened is a nutrient rich and highly important ingredient to all our potting mediums. They are far better than using regular compost or fertilizer and come with the added bonus of important bacteria, fungi and microorganisms. These all help to improve the quality of the potting medium, increase nutrient take up and rid your mix of any decaying plant matter.

As well as being added to your potting mixes it can be used as a top dressing to your indoor and outdoor plants. Simply top dress your soil and water it well.

Due to the nature of this product there is a chance for some worms tagging along for the rise as well as a small number of other critters, but they are all beneficial to the ecosystem that is your soil.

What is insect frass?

Insect frass or mealworm castings are similar to worm castings but are from Tenebrio molitor beetles (mealworm).

It is 100% natural, containing vital nutrients and beneficial microbes it helps create the perfect environment to promote root and plants growth for your plants.

Mealworm castings also contains naturally occurring plant immune response activators which help your plants resistance to disease and pests.

Like worm castings it can be mixed in the soil, used as a top dressing or even made into a tea to water into your plants. It can also be diluted into water and used as a foliar spray to be absorbed into your plant leaves.
